Olympic Games Paris 2024

The Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games mark the 33rd Olympic Games (XXXIII) and the 17th Paralympic Games (XVII).

The 2024 Summer Olympics will take place in Paris, France's capital, from 26 July to 11 August 2024, followed by the 2024 Summer Paralympics from 28 August to 8 September 2024. Both events will be watched by billions around the world.

There are expected to be 10,500 athletes (quota limit) participating in the Summer Olympics across 329 events in 32 different sports (including four additional sports), hosted in 35 venues.

Fourth Consecutive Team GB Coin

These coins are the fourth consecutive release in the Royal Mint's Team GB series, celebrating Olympic Games events: 2012 London, 2016 Rio de Janeiro, 2021 Tokyo, and now 2024 Paris.

This coin was first seen and released in the collectible 2024 United Kingdom annual coin sets, marking the first complete annual coin sets issued under the reign of King Charles III. Only a low mintage amount was issued in each individual metal set.

Centenary of Paris Olympic Games 1924

Paris 2024 marks the centenary (100th anniversary) of the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris and the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, also in 1924. This will be the sixth time France has hosted the Olympic Games, with three Summer and three Winter Olympics, and it will be the first time since 1924 that the Summer Olympics return to Paris.

Similarly, to mark the centenary of the 1908 London Olympic Games, The Royal Mint issued the 2008 Olympic Centenary £2 coins, available in gold proof and silver proof editions.

Paralympics Founded in the United Kingdom

The Paralympics originated in the United Kingdom, thanks to Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a neurologist at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, England. In 1948, Dr. Guttmann organised the Stoke Mandeville Games, a competition for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. This event is considered the forerunner to the Paralympic Games, which officially commenced in Rome in 1960.

Blackpool Olympic & Paralympic Athletes

Many may be surprised to learn that the small seaside resort of Blackpool is not only home to the iconic Blackpool Tower and Chards but also to legendary Olympic and Paralympic athletes who represented Team GB and went on to win medals.

  • Lucy Morton - Lucy made history in women's swimming by becoming the first British woman to secure an Olympic gold medal in an individual swimming event at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris.
  • Shelly Woods - An elite British Paralympic athlete who won two silver medals at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and one bronze medal at Beijing 2008.
